by GILMAN, Charlotte Perkins
New York City: The Charlton Company, 1914. Hardcover. Good. First edition. Volume 5, in original publisher’s boards, of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s groundbreaking monthly magazine, *The Forerunner*, acquired from Gilman’s estate. Tall octavo. pp. 336, [4 (contents)]. Illustrated terra cotta cloth stamped in black. Scattered light staining to the edges of the boards, head of spine back is a little frayed, light toning to the outer edges of the endleaves, about very good.
Written entirely by Gilman, The Forerunner featured serialized novels, short fiction, essays, articles, and verse; and was published by her with the aim of stirring one to action “upon the Progress of Women”. This volume contains the first appearance of the feminist novel *Benigna Machiavelli*, and the extended critical essay *Social Ethics*. Both the novel and essay appear here serialized and complete in twelve issues (January-December, 1914). A scarce copy in original boards. According to information provided by Gilman's estate, less than 200 hardcover copies of each volume of the Forerunner were printed. (Inventory #: 441972)
