Harper's in America issued this set based on the first 21 volumes of the Wessex Edition. This edition in 20 volumes was limited to 153 sets with Hardy's signature on an inserted leaf. The Well Beloved and A Group of Noble Dames were combined in a single volume. The set was partly printed from English plates and partly reset in America (where the volumes were already copyrighted).
