57 collages: Kurt Schwitters. Oct 22–Nov 17 1956 [poster]

New York: Sidney Janis Gallery, 1956. Poster. About 56.5 x 37.8 cm unfolded (folded in 8 it is about 15 x 19.5 cm). The title and exhibition information are stencilled in seven lines of bright red-silkscreen on newsprint over an inverted reproduction of the "Situations Wanted" ads from page W27 of the New York Times for Sunday, September 9, 1956. The 57 collages are listed in black on the verso. The design draws heavily on Marcel Duchamp's poster for the 1953 exhibition "Dada 1916-1923," also at Janis, but it has not been crumpled into a ball, fortunately. The slight distortion of shape and the shadow in the lower left of both images are from the difficulties (truncated) of photographing this large piece of paper. A very fresh copy with no visible damage at the folds; the color of the paper is uniform throughout, despite 65 years' passage. (Inventory #: 28570)
