by Haeckel, Ernst - EVOLUTION
Berlin: Georg Reimer, 1876. First Edition. Contemporary half cloth and marbled boards.. Very good; front free endpaper excised.. 8vo, 80 pp. + 1 color lithographic plate.
A controversial work. Haeckel proffers his vague speculation as to the origin of heredity and adaptation. He tries to explain these functions by an analysis of the smallest living entities (what he terms plastidules). It is the change in their 'motions' that is determinative for the evolution of the organism. The scientific argument degenerates rapidly as these basic entities are also imbued with 'soul' by the author. (Inventory #: 17070)
