Based on the 1956 autobiography of the same name by Colonel Dean E. Hess, a real-life United States Air Force fighter pilot in the Korean War. Hess was a technical advisor for the film and the gold flying helmet Rock Hudson wears was his personal possession. A poster for "Battle Hymn" appears outside the movie theater in the 1959 pilot episode of The Twilight Zone, "Where Is Everybody?"
