(Washington, 1828). Very good Pages 1-10 are the text of the committee's bill for the Tariff of 1828 or the Tariff of Abominations. Pages 10-20 contain rejected amendments to the bill by members of the Committee of the Whole on the State of the Union. This tariff would be applied to foreign imports in order to protect the domestic (truncated) agriculture markets in the northern and western United States. The tariff was opposed by the south because it would raise the cost of imported goods. John Quincy Adams signed the tariff bill into law on May 19, 1828, despite the economic harm it would cause merchant's from New England. (Inventory #: 278062)
