First edition. Inscribed by Captain Barclay. Robert Barclay Allardice (1779-1854), the 6th Laird of Ury, commonly known as Captain Barclay, is remembered today as “The Great Pedestrian,” a pioneer in the sport of race-walking, whose most notable feat was walking 1000 miles in 1000 hours in 1809. He began walking on the 1st of June, on a half-mile course laid out at Newmarket, and finished on the 12th of June, winning a purse of 1000 guineas, as well as side bets reportedly earning him the modern equivalent of several million dollars. His effort created great excitement and was attended by thousands of spectators. Thom provides an account of Barclay’s exploits, favorite pursuits, general mode of living, and genealogy. A chapter on training is by Barclay himself. Also included is a general history of ancient gymnastic exercises and modern pedestrianism. Inscribed by the great pedestrian himself as follows: “Capt. Barclay Allardice of Ury, to Miss Louisa, M. C. Boycott, of Rudge Hall, Salop. Maid, of the graceful mien, & sparkling eye / To thee, my kindest, fondest wishes fly. Ury 16th Novembr.”

66. . Rainsford, Marcus, Esq. An Historical Account of the Black Empire of Hayti: comprehending a view of the principal transactions in the revolution of Saint Domingo; with its antient and modern state. : Albion Press Printed: Published by James Cundee, Ivy-Lane, Paternoster Row; and Sold by C. Chapple, Pall Mall, 1805. 4to, recent full calf, gilt spine, raised bands, edges of covers gilt-stamped. xxiii, , 467, pp., engraved frontis, folding map, folding plan, 8 engraved plates & 3 pp. engraved facsimile manuscript. An important and sympathetic history of Haiti, from its discovery to Independence. Rainsford was a British military officer who, in 1799, had an unexpected opportunity to visit Saint-Domingue when a ship on which he was sailing from Jamaica to Martinique was dismasted in a gale in the vicinity of Cape François. As the British had recently been forced to withdraw from the island he was compelled to disguise his nationality and adopted the persona of an American trader. The ship repairs took several weeks, during which time Rainsford learned much about the state of society, and even met Toussaint L’Ouverture, with whom he conversed and played billiards. Soon after embarking again for Martinique, the vessel sprang a leak and was forced to put into Fort Dauphin where Rainsford was soon arrested “by four blacks, and a mulatto officer of great ferocity,” and imprisoned as a spy under sentence of death. He lay in prison fully expecting to be hanged, but was released after fifteen days, his sentence being reversed by Toussaint, to whom it had been sent for approval. Rainsford’s account of his experiences is given in Chapter IV State of Manners on the Establishment of Independence, &c. in St. Domingo, with a Memoir of the Circumstances of the Author’s Visit to the Island. The book is illustrated with fine engravings based on Rainsford’s own drawings. Two of these relate to his arrest and imprisonment. The first, entitled The Court Martial which sentenced the Author to Death : General Christophe President,” shows Rainsford in chains standing before a court martial of seven men. The second, entitled “The Author when under sentence of Death relieved by a benevolent Female of Color,” shows him in his prison cell with an elegantly dressed woman surreptitiously handing him food through the prison bars. Two other dramatic plates relate to the use of “blood hounds” by Spanish chasseurs to pursue, attack, and kill runaway slaves. Also included is a dignified full-length portrait of Toussaint L’Ouverture. An important historical and personal account of Haiti. Early acquisition note on preliminary: “June 9, 1829 Evan’s private sale JM.” Very good, library stamp and call number on blank verso of title page, accession number stamped in blue ink at foot of first printed page; notwithstanding these modest markings, a very nice clean copy.
