Items from the collection of James Strand began appearing on the open market in August, seemingly pillaged from Strand's Portland-area residence after he passed away early in the year. Strand was known to collect comics, as well as first editions in horror and science fiction genres, including Stephen King and H.P. Lovecraft. Among the known missing items is illustration art, including that of H.P. Lovecraft's horror novella, The Shadow Over Innsmouth, by Frank Utpatel. Anyone offered items they suspect stolen from this collection should contact the FBI Portland Field office: (503) 224-4181 or 1-800-CALL-FBI or tips.fbi.gov. Please join the Gender Equity Initiative on Zoom on November 8th, 2023, at 2 PM ET for a Brown Bag Lunch Series with Joyce Kosofsky from Brattle Book Shop. November 8th @ 2pm Joyce Kosofsky - Brattle Book Shop "How to keep a used bookstore running—It's a business." People always say that they'd love to run a bookstore. Joyce has been doing that (along with her husband, Ken Gloss) since 1978. There's not a lot of sitting around and reading (if any). It's a lot of work. Physical and mental. There's stocking stock (books are heavy), dealing with customers and other dealers, and poop in the lot. There's the physical aspect of the building's upkeep and the emotional toll when it all burns down (literally) and starts all over from scratch. What Joyce would like to share is a brief timeline of the past 45 years of running a used bookshop with all its faults. Joyce Kosofsky grew up in Boston and attended UMass/Amherst, graduating with a BA in Journalism. She worked as a cub reporter for a local daily newspaper, then at an advertising trade journal, and then at the Boston Phoenix newspaper. Joyce decided she did not like journalism, so she took a break. Ken (her husband) asked her to help out at the bookshop. That was in 1978... [more Brown Bag Lunch Series: Joyce Kosofsky]

First edition of quite possibly the first German children's book to be printed on cloth, thereby making it 'indestructible' for giving to small children. Geissler (1802–1872), a children's book illustrator, began publishing children's books and ephemera in Nuremberg in 1830. The fact that the title is given in English, German, and French shows he must have had an eye on the export market. Offered by Simon Beattie Ltd., booth 116. Reichenbach (Heinrich Gottlieb Ludwig) Album of drawings and watercolours of nocturnal birds, , c.1880 An album with 127 fine original illustrations of nocturnal birds, most in wat... The Library of Congress named Stephanie Stillo the new chief of the Library's Rare Book and Special Collections Division. Stillo joined the Library in 2016 and previously served as the curator of the Lessing J. Rosenwald Collection and the Aramont Library — two of the division's notable collections. The Rare Book and Special Collections Division is North America's largest collection of rare books. Spanning eras and subjects, its holdings include nearly 1 million books, broadsides, pamphlets, theater playbills, title pages, prints, posters, photographs, and medieval and Renaissance manuscripts. President Thomas Jefferson's library is at the center of the collection, which was sold to Congress in 1815. As division chief, Stillo will lead the collection's development, stewardship, interpretation, promotion, and service to meet the needs of government officials, scholars and the public. During her time at the Library, Stillo has collaborated with division staff to launch several engagement initiatives — including the division's first crowdsourcing campaign and two large symposiums — as well as the Artists and Archives program, which manages an archivist every year to process archival arrearage relating to the contemporary book arts. She also oversees the division's popular video series “From the Vaults” and co-manages the division's blog, Bibliomania. “Over the past seven years as Curator of the Lessing J. Rosenwald Collection and the Aramont Library, I have had the p... [more Library of Congress Names Stephanie Stillo Chief of Rare Book and Special Collections]

Mystery Pier Books on Hollywood's famed Sunset Boulevard has no shortage of celebrity clients, and their instagram account captures some of the famous faces that visit their shop in search of first editions, from Margot Robbie to Johnny Depp, and from Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers (a faithful client and good friend for 25 years) to the great director Guillermo del Toro. But a recent post bears witness to perhaps their highest-profile client yet: His Holiness, Pope Francis. While His Holiness did not visit the store in person, a personal friend of the Pope's is a long-time customer of Mystery Pier, and they came to owners Harvey and Louis Jason seeking a very specific book as a gift for the Pope. The Jasons sourced the book in question, a 1845 first-edition of St. Ignatius Loyola's “Spiritual Exercises” in Spanish, from another ABAA member, Owen Kubik, owner of Kubik's Fine Books. And His Holiness was very pleased when presented with the gift. In fact, Harvey and Louis Jason have received two blessed rosaries from Pope Francis in thanks for their services.
