Between the Covers Rare Books was founded in 1985. We have had a number of shops but presently operate by appointment only. We have a staff of about a dozen people and are housed in a 15,000 square foot former grammar school and have a catalogued inventory of about 250,000 volumes, with many more awaiting processing. We began as specialists in modern literary first edition, but also frequently issue both printed and online catalogs in many subjects, including African-American literature and history, books by and about women, counter-culture, GLBT, sports, photography, Americana, and many other subjects, and specialize in quoting individual items and collections to both institutions and private collectors. Of late we have placed a particular emphasis on archives and manuscripts of both living authors or of other historical interest. Our founder, Tom Congalton, was a collector and book scout before he started the business. He served as President of the ABAA in 2000-2002, and President of the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers from 2012-2014. Formerly on the faculty of the Colorado Antiquarian Booksellers Seminar, he has taught and continues to teach at Rare Book School at the University of Virginia since 2008. Please visit our website to read many articles, blogs, and other essays by members of our staff.
